LATINX
FILM
FESTIVAL

Since 1984, independent film makers from across Central and South America have gathered for Chicago's annual Latinx Film Festival. These works were my submissions for the 36th annual poster competition.

Getting
inspiration

Before developing my sketches,
I first wanted to look at different styles of similar posters. My aim in this stage was to get an idea of how the content inside the poster may be stylized.

BIRDS FOR REFERENCE
After deciding to use a parrot as my main subject of my first poster,
I started looking at different images of birds that I could reference and illustrate from.

LETting
IT FLY
My first draft was redrawing a side profile of a parrot flying.
I redrew the front section of the image, and left the wings and feathers to be drawn in a more abstracted style.

I then developed the parrot into a more abstracted geometric style and sampled how it may lay on an A4 sized poster with text.

TAKING A
DIFFERENT
ANGLE
After testing out how the side profile view of the parrot looked, I decided to choose a different image to redraw.
I felt this angle and posture more completely showcased the form of the bird and allowed a great opportunity for the film reels to extend out from the fanning feathers.
WELCOMING
THE NEW
GUY
Before I could start drawing the film reels, I needed to redraw the entire image. Since there is a lot of different overlapping shapes in the drawing, I first needed to see the redrawn bird to figure out how the reels may layer within the existing illustration.

It's alive!
I then added color to bring the outlines to life.

ruffling
the
feathers
This was the really fun part. Adding the film reels and developing the drawing started to inspire all sorts of new ideas of how to layout and style the final poster.

ADDING
IN THE
CONTENT
I decided to flip the bird so that the text could lay in the left-most section of the poster, added some new colors and gradients to the parrot, and finished the work with a fine grain texture for detail.

finding
the
image
I came across this image of a side profile of a woman with a flower in her hair and felt it was perfect for what I had in mind.

REDRAWING
THE
ARTWORK
Just as I did with the parrot, I first needed to redraw the image before developing it into my own illustration. I first redrew the larger shapes, then added dimension through colored gradient spots on the woman's skin, and cross hatching for the shadows.

ADDING IN THE FILM

ADDING
IN THE
CONTENT
The final step was adding in the content of the poster. I wanted to the woman to be the dominant subject in the poster while still allowing readability and proper hierarchy for the content to live.
